Aside from using a traditional business card printer

Business Cards are small cards which are used to inform the reader about an individual or business. Originally used in 17th Century France between members of the aristocracy, the business card has since become widely used to promote and to inform. Traditional cards tended to be printed solely in monochrome; today there is a spectrum of different designs and colours available to suit the purposes of its owner.
In general, business cards are printed on card stock which is 12pt thick, 45kg or 350 g/m², depending on which measurement you use. However, there are cards which are made from plastic, rubber, metal, magnetic material, and many other unconventional forms of media.
While it is possible to use your own Business card templates to print off designs at home or to use a Business card printer, the preferred method tends to either to have the cards professionally printed or to print them using software found either online or offline.
Previously, the process of full-colour printing was somewhat expensive, however it is now widely used in the process of creating business card templates and designs since batch and digital printing rather than the use of a business card printer has begun to be more widely used.
Business cards which are printed in colour tend to be printed using the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) four colour printing process, which involves layering colour to add depth and interest.
Aside from using a traditional business card printer, cards can also be made using a digital copier, which bakes toner onto the surface of the cards.

They can also be covered with aqueous coatings, laminated or covered with UV coating to protect the card and to make it more durable.
Folding or “tent” style business card templates are also a popular design. These cards fold to make the standard size. Double sided cards are also more common as printing technology has improved, and they are often printed in two languages to accommodate the needs of the growing global market.
Recently, technological advances have developed further still and it is now possible to get compact disc business cards known as business card CDs which are the same size as a normal business card, but which are designed so that they fit into the CD-ROM drive of a computer.
The IBCC, or the International Business Card Collectors, is one of several hundred known clubs involved in the collection of celebrity, antique or novel cards. Looking at card designs used by famous people throughout history can be a good way of stripping away confusion regarding design and using simplicity as an example. Dr Albert Einstein’s business card for example, is printed in a large capital typeface on simple brown cardstock.

How to Choose a Quality Business Card Printer

Article by NexCards.com

Shopping for a business card printer can be tricky. Unless you already have some printing experience, you will hear unfamiliar terminology and will likely find it difficult to make an optimal, informed decision.

The good news is that your decision basically boils down to only 5 key factors. These same 5 factors are applicable no matter what type of card you are considering, from silk business cards to glossy business cards, to plastic business cards or even metal business cards.

Read on to learn about the 5 key factors as well as specific recommendations around each.

Factor #1: Type of Printing Process

Printing processes will vary depending on each printer’s technology and product options. For example, some printers specialize in 1-sided, black and white cards whereas others specialize in dual-sided full color cards. In case you’re wondering, full color cards are the best option because they tend to generate the best possible first impression.

Quality full color printers utilize a full-bleed printing process, trimming the edges to facilitate end-to-end ink coverage. Additionally, the best printers utilize the industry standard 4 color CMYK printing process due to its ability to precisely match a broad spectrum of colors. Take a look at most full color magazines and you will see the depth and breadth of CMYK color printing.

Factor #2: Turnaround Time

Most quality printers have a 4-5 business day turnaround time, although a 1-2 day deviation from this is acceptable, especially if your card has a high level of customization. Be careful of printers promising a faster turnaround, as this could indicate questionable workmanship.

Factor #3: Type of Card Stock

Cardstock is primarily measured by material and thickness.
The material essentially boils down to paper or card stock. As you might guess, paper stock is not as durable as card stock and thus is suboptimal. Plastic business cards or even metal business cards are top-of-the-line, however these products can be cost-prohibitive and hence regular card stock is the best choice for most people.

The thickness of real card stock is measured by a point system that corresponds to thickness in inches. For example, 12pt. cardstock is 0.012 inches thick. Standard business cards come in 10pt, 12pt, 14pt, and 15pt thickness.

All else being equal, the thicker the cardstock, the higher the perceived quality and elegance. For most people, 15pt cardstock is sufficient.

Factor #4: Type of Coating

Coating applied to the finished product dramatically improves the look and feel of the card, not to mention its durability. It is perfect for full color business cards that could fade over time.

The 2 most popular business card coatings are UV gloss and silk. UV gloss provides the effect of a completely glossy business card. Conversely, silk business cards are non-glossy, and silk lamination is an excellent coating that allows writing on the card. Silk business cards also have a highly elegant look and feel.

Factor #5: Add-on Features

If you want your cards to make an amazing first impression, consider enhancement features such as round corners, spot UV business cards, foil stamping, embossing, or irregular cutting.

Spot UV business cards in particular are a fantastic way to create a fabulous first impression. This is where certain parts of your silk business card are “glossed over.” The effect does not impact the underlying colors, it only adds a shine.

Conclusion

Identifying what type of business card to get, as well as which printing company to hire, does not have to be stifling.

Regarding the cards themselves, avoid metal business cards or plastic business cards because these tend to be expensive. Instead, choose real cardstock for your cards, with extra coating and customization options.

In terms of selecting your printer, focus on full-color CMYK printers with standard 4-5 business day turnaround times.

With this module, learn how to change the way the font displays by modifying the color, type, size, and location of each seperate object. You can use the format painter option to apply the exact same formatting to multiple areas without going through each individual step redundantly. Also choose specific printing options such as the number of copies to be made, the margins, and page orientation.

Choose your own business card template

There are many options available to those who want to create their own business cards, ranging from the “do-it-yourself” method of printing designs out at home with an inkjet printer, to using a business card printer to print from a selection of set designs.  There are also business card template websites which can be found online and allow you to create your own designs in a form of online studio before they are delivered straight to your door.

The cheapest option available is to design and print the business cards using perforated business cards sheets which can be found in stationers.  Trying to feed card through a printer can be tricky though, depending on what thickness of card it is compatible with.  Most inbuilt computer software programs will not give a professional finish and the design layouts can tend to look a little uninspired, so (Depending on your level of artistic flair) scanning in your own hand-drawn images which, used along with word-processed text can be a way of producing some very effective designs.  Alignment and printing are just some of the problems you can encounter when using perforated business cards and a computer, but if you are willing to let your cards look a little messy (In the right way), they can serve as cards to promote your band with.

There are card cutters available to make your own business cards with, but they really do take practice using.  Another way to create your own business cards is to look online for websites which provide you with a range of business card templates which you can then alter, or you can create your very own business card templates.  Once the design is finished, you simply save and pay, and the cards are delivered to your door.  This is a good option for those who are short on time, as the business cards or business card templates can be designed from home, the office, or just anywhere you take a laptop which has internet connectivity.  These online business card design companies tend to vary in the quality of designs, so it is advisable to shop around.

Another way to design and create your own business card templates is to use a business card printer.  These allow you to choose your own business card template, however design options can be quite limited and there is a lot of waiting involved while the business card printer prints out your business cards.

Regardless of whether you decide to make your own business cards from scratch, use business card templates online or you are using a business card printer, weigh up how you want your finished card to look against your budget.  You may wish to economize if you want to avoid overspending on costly business cards which look very effective, but which leave the very thing you’re trying to promote short of cash.

I need suggestion for best affordable Business Card Desktop Printer.?

Question by x1: I need suggestion for best affordable Business Card Desktop Printer.?
I need suggestion in buying a printer that has great quality in print but not too expensive. I’m willing to spend from $ 100-$ 220. My main purpose for this is printing business card or brochures (not really big. for personal use and some client needs). Brands I have in mind are Epson and HP (I don’t know the model). Some Effect’s I’m looking for a printer they support Glossy finish (I don’t know really the term, but what i mean is it has a shiny surface after print), UV Spot finish (specific shininess), Matt Finish. I don’t know if the effects are supported by printers. But if you know some technique to achieve this effect, just let me know.

Thanks!
I forgot to mention that i’m also concern when printing the backside of the paper. If I print it an ordinary printer like canon iP1880, it miss align. In giving a suggestion I would appreciate if you mentions the model and brand.

Thanks!

Most any printer can handle business cards, if I understand what you mean. We have a normal HP printer. Check out the printers at your Office Depot or Best Buy or some place like that (check the printer IN PERSON and you can tell by feel and by look, a lot, whether it seems sturdy and whether the paper try seems okay, and whether the control menu seems sufficient, and all that stuff…)

Then, you can download FREE business card templates from Avery, if you don’t already have the correct business card templates in Word. Check. They’re usually something like Avery 8879 or such. (That’s the ones I use for MY business cards.) Then do some creative artwork to build your document. Use Word or OpenOffice to build a card using the template. Include a graphic from your logo, and some fancy fonts and such.

You can pick out, at Office Depot or such, a business card stock that’ll break off with NO SEAMs! (That’s what my 8879s do. When they’re printed, you let them dry for awhile, then you fold the seams backward, and they just break out, no visible seams, clean edges.) Voila! No special printer.

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

There are also business card template websites available online

There are a wide variety of choices available if you are looking to create your own business cards, whether you go for the “DIY” option of printing out designs at home using an inkjet printer or you use a business card printer to print from a variety of set designs.  There are also business card template websites available online which let you draw up your own designs in an online studio before delivering them directly to your door.

The most inexpensive option is to design and print the business cards using perforated business cards sheets, which can be found in stationary shops.  Attempting to feed the card through a printer can be difficult, as it depends on what thickness of card the printer is compatible with.  Most inbuilt computer software will not produce a professional finish to the design and the layout can tend to look a little bland, so (Depending on how good your artistic skills are), scanning in hand-drawn images which can be used alongside word-processed text can be a way of producing some very striking looking designs.  Printing and alignment are just two of the problems you can encounter when using a computer with perforated business cards, but depending on how polished you want them to look (Are you promoting a blue chip company, or a craft stall?) they can serve a purpose.

Card cutters are available to make your own business cards with, but they do take some degree of practice in order to get the effect right.  Another way to create your own business cards is to look online for websites which offer a variety of different business card templates for you to then alter, or programs by which you can then create your own business card templates.  Once the design is finalized, all you need to do is to save it and pay online.  The business cards can then be delivered to your door.  The fact that this can be done almost anywhere with a laptop and internet connection makes it one of the most popular methods of designing and making business cards available.

Another way to create and design your own business card templates is to use a business card printer.  These let you decide on your own business card templates, however design options can be rather limited and the business card printer can take some time to use.  On the upside, the finished product can be made directly for you there and then, which for some is a bonus.

Whether you decide to use a business card printer, use business card templates online or you make your own business cards from scratch, always measure up the cost of production against your budget.  You may wish to use a less expensive method of creating your business cardsif you wish to save extra money for the enterprise you are promoting.
